baby’s heartbeat.
Schedule your detailed ultrasound for 18-20 weeks.
This ultrasound will make sure that the baby’s anatomy is
normal and may be able to tell you the baby’s sex (if you
want to know). You can bring a VHS videotape if you wish.
Next visit
Your next scheduled visit will be in 4 weeks.

issues, problems with abdominal wall or spinal cord.
Review info in prenatal testing brochure at home prior to
your next appointment.
Your baby
Baby’s neck is now long enough to lift his/her head
off of its body.
Muscles and bones (initially soft tissue called cartilage) are
starting to develop.
The eyelids, nose, lips and chin are distinct. The inner ear
has developed.
Fingerprints are forming.
For the partner
It is normal to have mixed emotions during the
pregnancy.
Try to stay involved with your partner – go to doctor’s
visits as possible to have a chance to ask questions, hear
instructions and listen to the baby’s heartbeat in the
office.
Tell your partner if you feel left out; it can help to spend
time together each day to talk about daily experiences
including those with the pregnancy.
Don’t withdraw if you are feeling bad – tell your partner
about your feelings and ask about her feelings as well.
Talk to other new fathers about their experiences.
Take walks together.
Your body
The following symptoms are typical:
Bleeding gums. Try a soft toothbrush, floss gently. See your dentist if your gums are painful and swollen.
Headaches. Tylenol may be used as needed and as directed on the bottle.
If you develop severe headaches which do not resolve with Tylenol, or headaches associated with weakness, fever, or changes in your vision, notify your physician.
Stuffy nose and nose bleeds. Try using saline
nose sprays, dab of Vaseline in each nostril. Do not use a nasal decongestant spray – it can make symptoms worse.
Constipation. Drink more fluids, eat high fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, eat 5 or 6 prunes/day, try over the counter stool softener (docusate), Metamucil, Fibercon. Do NOT use laxatives ( i.e. Ex-Lax) without talking with
your physician.
Heartburn. Try eating small, frequent meals, don’t lie down after you eat, sleep with your head and shoulders slightly raised on a pillow, avoid hot, spicy or exotic food. Medications safe to take include: TUMS, Mylanta, Pepcid. Ask your physician if your symptoms worsen.
Pregnancy tips
Dental care is important during pregnancy
– particularly teeth cleaning. Notify your dentist that you are pregnant.
Sex is o.k. while you are pregnant. It is normal to have some spotting and cramping after intercourse.
A warm bath or Jacuzzi is o.k. as long as the temp is 100 F or less and you stay in for 10 minutes or less.
Heating pad for 15 minutes at a time is o.k.
Drink at least 8-10 glasses (eight ounce size) of fluid every day.
Limit caffeinated drinks to only two12 oz. glasses per day.
Minimize fruit drinks as they are high in calories.
Tell your physician if it hurts when you urinate as you may have a bladder infection.
Frequent urination alone is very common during pregnancy.
Begin doing Kegel’s exercises. Ask your physician if you need more information on this exercise. You should be doing 20-30 repetitions/day to help prevent urinary leakage during, and particularly, after pregnancy.
