desire.
Next visit
Your next scheduled visit will be in 4 weeks.
Your doctor will listen to baby’s heartbeat; check your blood
pressure, weight and urine.
Your baby
By 18th week, your baby is around 8 inches long.
Soft down hair (lanugo) covers its body.
Hair is beginning to grow on its head and tiny
eyelashes and eyebrows are appearing.
Thick white coat (vermix) covers its body and
protects its skin from the amniotic fluid.
Baby’s movements are becoming stronger and you
should begin to feel baby’s movements between
18-24 weeks. The movements initially feel like
“fluttering”.
Baby may start to suck his thumb.
For the partner
Take turns discussing with your partner your
excitement about having a child, dreams and plans.
Take turns discussing your worries and concerns.
Begin to talk about money and taking time off of
work.
Talk about who will be coming to visit and help you
and your partner once the baby is born.
Your body
The following symptoms are typical:
The area around the nipple (areola) may become darker and the little bumps on the areola and veins will become more prominent.
A dark colored line will develop below the belly button and extend to the pubic bone. This is called the linea nigra.
More hair may develop on your abdomen – this will improve after you deliver.
Red spots on your face, neck, upper chest or arms or are on the palms of your hands are normal and will disappear after delivery.
Stretch marks – may appear on your breasts, buttocks, thighs or abdomen. They will appear as reddish streaks. Oils, creams, lotions may help in minimizing but will not prevent. After delivery, they will fade to fine silvery lines.
Your energy should be improving as should any nausea.
Pregnancy tips
Helpful books include:
“What to Expect – The First Year” and “Baby Bargains”.
Travel is o.k. up until around 36 weeks pregnancy. If travel is for more than 2 hours, drink lots of fluid and walk around every 2 hours to prevent blood clots in your legs.
It is o.k. to paint while pregnant but be sure to use latex paints in well ventilated rooms and preferably do not climb any ladders.
You may develop more illnesses during the pregnancy – your immune system is lower and colds, flus and stomach illnesses are more common. Do what you can to keep your body healthy such as drinking lots of water, exercise and plenty of sleep.
Take time every day to relax even if only for 10-15 minutes.
If you are gaining too much weight, don’t diet but do: cut down on fats, choose lean meats, poultry, drink nonfat or 1% milk products, choose fresh fruit, vegetables, fruit ices for snacks and desserts and walk every day!
