24-28 Weeks
The information contained herein is not all inclusive. If you experience any difficulties
or have other concerns, please contact your physician or go to L&D or to the nearest ER.

This visit
Check blood pressure, weight and urine.

Listen to your baby’s heartbeat.

Measure your baby’s growth by measuring the size
of your abdomen.

Next visit
At 26-30 weeks, the following tests will be done:
Screen for anemia.

Diabetes testing – you will receive a bottle of
flavored drink to consume before your next visit.

Rhogam if you are rh negative blood type.

Your baby
Your baby weighs about 1.5 – 2 lbs. and is 13-15
inches long.

The fine, downy hair, lanugo, begins to disappear.

Your baby can hear your voice or other nearby
sounds and might respond to loud noises. Your
baby will recognize your voice and your partner’s
voice after birth.

Your baby is starting to practice breathing.

For the partner
Talk to your partner’s stomach. Baby will recognize
your voice after delivery. Have fun trying this out,
even if it feels silly. Baby may or may not move each
time you speak, so don’t expect too much!

Your body
The following symptoms are typical:
Painful kicking – change your position and hope
that baby does too, try cupping your hands
around baby’s buttocks and gently move the
baby.

Pelvic pressure – sometimes occurs when a joint
at the front of the pelvic (symphysis pubis) relaxes
in response to hormones. You might also have
groin discomfort or side pain due to stretching of
the round ligaments.

Urinary leakage – try Kegel exercises – 30
times/day.

Swelling in feet and ankles – particularly at the
end of the day. This should disappear overnight.
Avoid high salt foods, keep your feet up as
much as possible, wear support stockings. If
swelling does not resolve or you also have a
severe headache or blurred vision, call your
physician.

Pregnancy tips
If you have inverted nipples, consider the use of a
breast shell.

Consider signing up for breastfeeding courses,
delivery courses or sibling preparation classes for
your child.

If you do not wish to sign up for any classes,
be sure to schedule a labor and delivery tour to
familiarize yourself with your surroundings for the
big day!!

It is o.k. to take a warm (not hot) bath during
pregnancy unless your doctor advises you
otherwise.

Continue to watch for pelvic pain,
unremitting headaches, burning or pain
when you urinate, cramping in your leg or
foot that won’t go away, blurred vision that
does not go away, chest pain, water leaking
(not discharge), vaginal bleeding.
